Poets Corner

I Left

by Detramira Littleton

Left what I called a bad home
To basically living on my own
Yes ma'am no ma'am yes sir no sir was how I was raised
But now days, kids cuss and slap their parents in the face
"Wake up! You're late for school"
Now it's, "It's your life make your own rules"
Parents keeping me on track
Crack heads, excuse me, smokers walking on the track
I thought I lost focus because of my surroundings
But in the last few months, I found out these things
I can't blame it on South Dallas as much as I want to
The decisions were made by me, so I knew what I had to do
I had to get my life back…..I left
Left sleeping till 2 o'clock
Chilling till 5 in the morning on the block
I had to make a change
I know I expect them to say my name,
so I can walk across the stage.

Here what our students say about their school...

"The school means a lot to me because they have helped me with my daily work and they have inspired me to finish school. They have prayed for me and helped me in many ways. If it weren’t for them, I don’t think I would be in school right now."
senior, 16 year-old single mom
"I think it’s a good school for kids like me. I think if I hadn’t come to this school I would be dead or back in jail. It’s kinda like a last-chance thing. The school means a lot to me because they have helped me whti my daily work."
senior 18 years old
"This school has meant everything to me. I dropped out as a freshman and I actually went to juvenile. My probation officer gave me a referral to this school . . .If it weren’t for this school, I probably would be hanging out or skipping school, not caring about anyone. . . Education was pointless to me. . ."
senior, 17 years old, went on a mission trip to Ethiopia in February
"The teachers made me feel like they cared about me and didn’t want me to go down the wrong path. When you’re doing your work and you don’t understand, they come to you and help you with it."
senior, 17 years old, went on a mission trip to Panama in March
